Thinking of a Move to (mt) with their (gs)
Well i’ve been doing a lot of thinking as of late whether to move from my current VPS host (Linode) and go to (mt) to try out their (gs). I seriously have loved every moment with Linode and can’t thank them enough for all of the support they have given me. A few things which have made me think of this decision are listed below:
- Lack of Money – I don’t think I can really afford $30.95 every month with other bills coming out, and having to pay off my Budgeting Loan from the DWP, giving my mother board again, mobile phone credit (haven’t topped up my phones for about 3/4 month.) the reason I’m paying $30.95 is because I have an extra IP address allocated to my account; although (mt)’s (gs) is only $20 a month which is considerably cheaper.
- Want to try something different – Admittedly; before I went with Linode I was in two minds whether to go with (mt) or Linode but I chose Linode because they offered full root access and deployment of many different servers (which is a pain sometimes)
- More “Bang for the Buck” – Currently I’m paying $30.95 a month with Linode using their Linode 540 Plan with an extra IP allocated. I get 24 GB storage, 300 GB Data Transfer, Full ssh and root access, Guaranteed resources, out of band console shell, dedicated ip addresses, premium bandwidth, managed dns with api’s. Whereas the (gs) has 100GB Storage, 1TB Data Transfer, Up to 100 domains to host, 1000 email accounts (won’t need that as I use GMAIL anyway), Clustered architectures, Urchin Analytics, 1 Click Software Installs, and much more (according to their site) all for $20.
That’s my main reasons for wanting to switch to be honest… anyway please; let me know what you guys think! I need some comments about this before I make the switch and before I have to pay Linode again (I get paid this friday)

I can rent you a node at VPS.net if you want to. My server is running at VPS.net and it’s pretty damn fucking awesome.
1 node would give you 600Mhz of dedicated CPU usage, 376MB of RAM, 10GB storage and 250GB of bandwith.
For now I would probably do this for about 10 euros a month or so as I already have a server set up. Hit me on Skype or MSN if you want to.
p.s. Do note that my VPS isn’t running Apache at all, it’s running Nginx and PHP-FPM. Don’t worry, you’ll love both of them.

I really wouldn’t do it. They keep having colossal failures.
I tried them out for a month and didn’t have any downtime issues, but the amount of control you get within the control panel is a bit disappointing. It’s basically a well-marketed shared hosting environment.
One of the worst parts about (mt) for me was the databases. They are quite limited unless you get their additional database service.
I’d really recommend going with Rackspace Cloud if cost is an issue. You can get a 256MB cloud server for around $11 a month. Bandwidth isn’t included, but it’s very cheap. I generally spend only a couple of dollars a month on bandwidth.
Anyway. Those are my thoughts. I think after being with Linode, you’ll find (mt) to be very disappointing.
